Het stabiliseren van glucose heeft een grote invloed op het aantal diagnoses van diabetes
- Glucose daalt snel in volbloed - met een snelheid van 7-8% per uur - dus het voorkomen van deze daling is belangrijk voor een nauwkeurige diagnose van diabetes mellitus
Sommige stabilisatiemethoden zijn onvolmaakt of onpraktisch
- Natriumfluoride is een veelgebruikte stabilisator, maar terwijl het enolase in de glycolytische route remt, blijven andere enzymen actief en gaan door met het metaboliseren van glucose.

- FC Mix-buisjes bevatten fluoride om enolase te remmen, citroenzuur om het monster aan te zuren en andere glycolytische enzymen te remmen, evenals EDTA dat het magnesium cheleert.
